church prayers go unanswered

It was a big night in the fifth, 1st v 2nd taking to the baize and you could sense how much the church wanted it, especially as this is effectively our very own derby match

Prior to the nights proceedings the Fairfield B were rocked by the news that two of our star players; G horrocks and D duffy, would be unavailable for the encounter. would the fairfield have enough in the locker with just the bare 6 players????

The match started off brightly enough, with a decent scrap between c stevenson and their lad putting us 1-0 and on course for a 6th consecutive fifth division win.

next up, C horrocks looking to maintain a decent start to the campaign for himself winning 4 from 5 and instantly took control of the table with some good tactical play. However, our man missed key chances to develop his table into a match winning position eventually leading to their player getting the chance and making it count. 1-1

Looking to put us back on track, el capetan stepped up alongside c stevenson looking to quell the growing murmur of hope from the church. the game started tentatively with both pairs in decent positions, but it was the church who took first advantage with a delicate snooker leaving our boys in trouble. A decent hit out of the snooker proved not enough; as fifth div clearances go this one was a bit special! to the table with 5 balls left in awkward positions but never ran out of position until the black and then an awesome pot put the game beyond. nothing we could do, and then it was 1-2 to the Church.

It appeared only divine intervention could save our 100% record now!

The churches star man from the doubles game stepped up and our captain put himself forward on a 100% win rate this season. The game swung between both players before S McCormick put it to bed with a fine finish to bring us back into the match and faint hopes of victory still on. 2-2

Next up I was put into the fray hoping to maintain a good singles campaign this term with 5/5 against one of the churches elder statesmen. the game started strongly for the home team and could have been clearance of the season contender but for HURRENDOUS kick on the last red leaving no hope for positioning and a sticky tactical battle ensued. Eventually i was able to hold it together and finish off. 3-2

All of a sudden we were in the lead for the first time since the first frame and confidence shot through the team. So I stepped up alongside P coleman to attempt to put us on the cusp of victory and leave the church needing a miracle. In a very tactical affair where the home team left several good successful snookers, it was the church who got the chance they needed when a Certain A Bonney (dunno who that clown is) played the single worst safety shot in the history of world pool to gift wrap the game for the church. 3-3

Now it was up to the boys in reserve to step up and show why we have won 5/5 this season. First up, P Coleman who played a simply sublime innings, giving the church inn man nothing to go at and despite a missed black for a sensational 8 ball eventually was able to tidy it away to leave us on the cusp of arguably our best win of the season.

The church were on their knees hoping and preying for a miracle as S Williams the fearless was put into the fray. In probably his best ever game for us, he was simply awesome from the start. potting 4 down off the break before a delicate safety gave him the opportunity he needed. AND WHAT A BLACK TO FINISH! thin as you like into the pocket, had to be hit with pace to get the back to take and avoid the in off... he did it all and in sensational circumstances we now move 10 points clear of the church and remain 7 ahead of the victoria with one game left of this first half of the season.

I think the church need a new god
[Submitted by aaronb21]

It was hardly a classic but Frank McDougall got us off to a flyer with dish off the break. Rhys McDougall duly followed with deserved win...2-0. The McDougalls paired up in the third but came unstuck, Jason Brereton had a run of misfortune during his frame against (IMO) their best player and eventually succumbed to an in off to hand a quickly forgotten frame to the opposition....2-2. Sam Reynolds nearly got the second dish of the evening, then had to sweat it out as the 1936 Indies Champion (sorry!) attempted a fine clearence himself but come unstuck on the final yellow leaving Sam an easy black. Craig Mansell and Dave Phillipson stepped up and won a well controlled doubles match...4-2. Mike Peake played a solid seventh and decisive frame although the elements (the table) nearly had him. A coin was tossed to see who played the final frame and the victor was Stewart McManus....shame he wasn't victorious on the baize!!! White Boar 'B' 5 Heap Bridge SC 3. A fair resulted which flattered neither team.
[Submitted by Big Dave]
